Well if it does become available to the unwashed at reasonable prices, look out for TETRA being the new flavour of the month on 70cm, RIP DMR.

I think when Airwave comes to the end of it's life we might see the terminals (handies and mobiles) but possibly not the infrastructure...
So there might be an upsurge in DMO TETRA (simplex) for the unwashed..

Motorola now own Airwave.

Migration to a pre-standards solution is supposed to be complete by 31/12/2019

if analogue licence retention was anything to go by it will be 5 years before the DIMETRA architecture is sold.

Copy of information received from AOR Japan by their UK agent Waters & Stanton and compilation of photos from the AOR stand 2016 Tokyo HAMFAIR:
" We are currently working on a new firmware which will allow decoding of TETRA signals. It is still in alpha stage though and will need an extra few weeks testing and bug fixing before it can be released officially.

In the meantime a "proof of concept" will be displayed officially for the first time at the HAMFAIR in Tokyo on Aug. 20 and 21."

I doubt that'll be the case. TETRA radios generally have much lower power outputs than DMR or analog radios. The range won't be nearly as good. Combine that with the lack of infrastructure and what will probably happen is there will be one or two small groups who use tetra in their local areas to chat to each other, just like any analog net but on tetra instead.

TETRA would definitely be fun to play with but it will never be as big on amateur as DMR is now.

I think Stan is thinking that TETRA means the old aspiration that somebody will eventually make a dirt cheap decrypter so people can listen to the emergency services again, but as it's not going to be used by them for much longer, there will be nothing to beat!

It's not really even news anymore, they announced it ages ago! I don't remember whether it was last year or the year before, but it was quite some times ago.

It will also mean that the emergency services can use their radios in the Underground system, 7/7 suffered badly from this. A chum of mine in heavy engineering has been using the LTE system for a few months in the bowels of the Underground and he says it works perfectly. Not only can they speak but can exchange pictures and videos in real time, very useful if you need technical advice and don't want to take a 30 minute trip to the surface to get a signal.

I don't know which manufacturer will get the contract, but he is using a Huawei branded handset.
