gmham, what radio did you use to receive the taxi on as its a bit of an odd frequency to my eyes? Could it have been 173.0625 and maybe it was 'rounded off' by the 'steps'/bandplan in the radio/scanner?

That frequency is a single one, no pairing. It's "Simple UK Light" - one of about 15 channels you can use on the cheap (small fee) as an alternative to PMR446

Re: taxi split freq ?
Yes that is where my mind was going:
http://ofcom.org.uk/static/businessradi ... mpleUK.pdf
There is a taxi firm in my street that has one of these channels programmed into their radios in addition to the usual technically assigned 'taxi business' frequency so that they can talk car to car 'CB' stylee.
As you correctly state, no split.
Strange but true.

Re: taxi split freq ?
Ah okay thanks for that ! am I correct in saying that no fixed base use is even permitted with the light licence ?

Re: taxi split freq ?
Yes thats correct, the OFCOM doc states:
Technical conditions
The maximum permitted ERP for mobile stations is 5 Watts;
The frequencies listed in this schedule shall be used in single frequency mode only;
The use of base stations is not permitted.
But like I stated a taxi firm near me has used one of these frequencies for general chit chat, car to car and base to car for ages without any problems.

Re: taxi split freq ?
Okay thanks so at 5 watts at 173 mhz in mostly built up areas they are not going to achive much in the way off distance then ?! do you get to choose your spot light licence freq or is it allocated ? I know there used to be one on low vhf poss around 86 mhz just wonder if this would have been a better freq to have choosen for car to car use ?

Re: taxi split freq ?
Hardly anybody uses the five VHF low frequencies, not heard a peep out of any of them in 6 years!
KEY : = channel/stud | ~ = CTCSS/DCS | ^ = transmitter site | ¯ = overhead | * = trunked
