[slightly off topic ] pronounciation of WOUXUN ;-)

Post by bigbloke »

Hi All,

I note that on one of the chinese import yahoo groups there was a ...feisty....exchange on how you pronounce
WOUXUN.

some said , "WOW_SUN" , others WASHING, others "WOO-SOON" and more besides .

so I asked a native chinese speaking friend from Singapore for a definitive answer.

He replied :
From the Chinese characters: "欧讯" should be pronounced as "O" (as O in Oval) and "shin" (the lower part of your leg)
The correct Chinese spelling should be "OuXun".

“WouXun” I believe is a mis-spell... oops!

If you pronounce it as Chinese.. it should be "O-shin".

If you pronounce "WouXun" in Chinese it should be "Wo" (as in woah! woah! hold your horses!) and Shin

If you talk to a Chinese person.. saying O-shin will impress him.
If you talk to a non-Chinese person .. Wo-shin sounds better.
I asked also if "OuXun" translated or whether it was just a brand name ?

apparently its "Europe (or european) Communications"

SO...there you have it! At least now if someone asks you what radio you're running (assuming its a [w]ouXun) you can tell them.

regards

I'd not seen a debate on any other radio , but apparently...
"普星" is pronounced as "Pool Sing" (PuXing in Chinese).
The characters literally mean a popular star.

so there you are - your radio is called a "pop star 777"

BUT heres a point ...had you KNOWN it was a "pop star 777" would you have bought it in the first place ?
or would the brand name have put you off ?

I'm not going to hassle the poor guy on all the other radio names though. We'd be here all week !!!

seasons greetings
