Interoperability, this is the very basis of a radio communication hobby, CTCSS screws this up!, do you folks agree??

Nope. Keeps my radio quiet, can be switched off when not needed.

HM Forces use it to keep out interference, a universal tone of 150Hz, has worked well for years..

Useful for the user who doesn't want that crashing hiss between transmissions. Equally handy for users who want to get a size 14 in Prussian Blue from the stockroom but don't need to hear Bobby from the DiY shop next door! And remember, it's just a squelch opening signal so if you come across a broadcast using CTCSS, just make sure your radio has it turned off (or if you can't do that, then just press the Monitor button.) Funny how that cheap eight channel PMR from years ago, because it has no CTCSS can easily monitor those expensive sets with their fancy new "38 Privacy Channels"!

IIRC The only reason Clansman had 150Hz on TX is to make it inter-operable with the US gear (PRC25 etc). I could be wrong though. Either way, CTCSS is great. I wish ham repeaters would use it on the output (NOT the idents), so I could leave the radio on the output and not have to hear the idents every 15 mins.

CTCSS Reverse-burst can make de-keys very difficult to detect in a noisy environment, requiring the use of silly words or beeps to substitute for the noise instead.

My local repeater, GB3BN does exactly that, CTCSS is only active on the output when the CTCSS and 1750Hz gated squelch is open on the input..
