Thankfully when I read in a previous thread what the bandplan would be, I programmed all of them into my scanner, lets see what the take up rate is.
You can never have enough radios!

For a little while at least channels 9-16 should be fairly free of casual users as it'll take a while for the new handsets to work their way into the leisure market. That's leaves the freqs free for us radio jockeys to play with

I suppose the noisy crowd will now want 32 analogue channels?

And AM, and SSB, and more power, and we can call it UHF CB. Oh, wait...

Family Radio Service now allows 2 watts on the GMRS channels, so why can't we have 2 watts also?

Re: PMR446 Goes 16 Channel From March
Well channel 16 seems to be the watering hole around here at the moment - 446.19375. On Saturday evening there were a couple of separate nets taking place on there seeming oblivious to each other and seems to be busy lately most days.
Bizarrely on Saturday one of the stations was a full license holder. How do I know this? Because I know the guy and used to be a neighbour of his a few years back, but also because he repeatedly gave his callsign at the end of overs (MW0***)! He maybe forgot where he was!
Even more bizzare was that he asked stations to take it up one channel, so they all complied on their Baofengs (he was on his widebanded amateur rig) and they of course ended up on 446.200.
This as you all know is a business radio frequency and is used mainly by B&Q in this area and whist the powers to be may be turning a blind eye to pmr446 illegal activity, obviously if you start causing interference to a licensed user then it may all end in tears for someone, not that I care mind you, it's none of my business, just seems a bit silly!

Re: PMR446 Goes 16 Channel From March
Interesting... I read something about the 16 channels on PMR446 last night but I just took it with a pinch of salt as people have been talking about it for years but now its official.
So the first 8 channels are analog will all 16 channels be analog?
What are the digital PMR446 channels?
Next we just have to wait for OfCom to relax the fixed antenna rule if they haven't done this already and if FRS users stateside are now allowed to use 2 watts then its only a matter of time PMR446 gets 5watts legally

Re: PMR446 Goes 16 Channel From March
I just wanted to add this copied and pasted from the ofcom site.
Converted radio equipment PMR446 users are reminded that their radios are only licence-exempt if they are built and operated within the conditions of the exemption regulations. If modifications are made to the equipment, such as adding an antenna connector, the overall maximum ERP or other technical parameters must not exceed the permitted levels set out in the Interface Requirement.
So by the looks of things you can have a removable antenna on PMR 446 legally.
