PMR446 after Brexit?

Post by scanhermit »

Given that it's a European standard, will HMG grab the allocation for paying users or will its ubiquity be its protection?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Article 50 won't see the UK dragged into the Atlantic, we'll still be in Europe.

The Government can allocate/remove charge or give free access to whatever they wish. Before we went into Europe we had harmonisation. Some done locally with the other European countries, some done worldwide. PMR446 discussion here is through enthusiasts, but they're a tiny proportion of the users - so as a service where the Government do not even know who uses it, they really cannot move it, can they? If they paid a fortune for national advertising saying DANGER - PMR446 is now dangerous and banned, how many walkie talkie toy owners actually know they are PMR446 - they are just radios?

They will remain in use until they wear out, and replacements are needed.

I doubt there will be a change of pmr446 after brexit, simply because CEPT isn't the EU.

Won't be affected as other posts have stated, see Confederation of European Postal Telecommunications formation 1959. Way before the EU was conceived!

Even if it *was*, it would be cutting off your nose to spite your face to withdraw it. There clearly is a need for PMR446 so it would have to be replaced with something equivalent, which takes time and effort to develop, manufacturers need to be on-board, etc.

Let's face it, spending any money on a 200KHz wide segment of a band that really belongs to the MOD here is something with amazingly low priority. The system works - loads of people use it, and as far as I can see, it doesn't cause any grief. Visitors to the UK can happily bring in their kit, we can take ours when we go on holiday - on the beach or up a mountain. They're not going to expect us to vacate it, and why would we wish to move. Short range so no interference issues. We'll probably just call it something else with the same initials. Public Mobile Radio? Or just leave it alone.

I was always curious about its name as you aren't allowed a mobile set.

Never really thought about that, but hams have portable and mobile as separate things - when often that too is the same thing, and business radio has been mobile or fixed station - yet PMR covered base stations, when they certainly aren't?

Barring something unforseen, 446 will remain for the present. The so called Great Repeal Bill freezes EU laws in their current form and incorporates them into UK legislation. In order for 446 to disappear there would have to be new legislation revoking the old, and at present that doesn't seem likely.
