Coax and Twig

Post by Phoenix »

Thinking of setting up an homebase PMR radio but need a bit of advice.
What coax would you recommend for UHF ?
Need a good vertical that's tuned for this band and not a compromise white stick.

Thanks for your help so far

hi Phoenix, if your serious about 446 then I would get a beam.

http://www.hamradio.co.uk/aerials-amate ... d-2935.php

and decent coax that provides better than 0.02db loss per foot.

or if your a handyman then googleing 'build a uhf antenna' will bring up loads of weird and wonderful designs made out of junk from the shed for pennies including vertical omnis like you want. I have a white stick for general scanning, they are okay for the money.
Alinco DR135DX, Baofeng UV-5R, TYT MD380 (UHF), Realistic Pro-2035, JRC NRD-545 DSP, whitestick and ½ wave silver pole on the chimney and various lengths of wire draped around the garden.

Remember that at UHF, a typical Yagi has a fairly narrow beamwidth so you would probably have challenges receiving stations around you unless you were thinking of point to point.
Probably better off with a vertical colinear. Get it up as high as possible and clear of any obstructions.
Feed with very good low loss coax like the kind you suggest.

The red RG213 coax is pretty good.
