Does anyone know anything about the Baofeng UV-5X?

Post by Cymro »

Hi all,

Has anyone used this radio or know anything about it? Is it analogue or digital? Have tried "search" on here for info but to no avail.

Thanks.

Probably one of the series of Baofeng UV-5N radios where you replace the N with any letter. The original was the UV-5R.

Maybe you saw someone referring to them, and what they meant by the X was any radio in that series.

It won't be digital. It will be a VHF UHF dual band, circa £30, low quality FM handheld radio.

...Or maybe not. I just searched on google for it and found that it actually is a real radio.
I assumed you would have tried that already. :?

Yes, I tried the Baofeng website, but couldn't find it, which confused the issue. Was hoping that someone on here had tried one or knew something about it.

There is plenty of information on the first page of search results

I realise that, but I still want others' opinions, that's why I joined this site. There are many knowledgeable people on T1 and I find their comments extremely helpful. If everyone used only search engines for relevant info, I use "Ixquick", then we wouldn't need forum websites.

Ahh sorry, my mistake. I misunderstood what you were asking. I thought you were asking for any info at all on the radio, rather than opinions.

Some opinions are useful information, that's why we have many online forums such as T1.

I have 2 of the UV-5X. Bought them over the 5R for the looks alone - essentially the same radio with (allegedly) improvements to the front end. Better performance than my old Intek MT-5050s, range in the open between the pair good for 4-5 miles, tested on PMR low power with standard antennae.

Analogue with CTCSS/DCS + DTMF

Designation changed recently to 'FF-12P'.

Many thanks Ripshod,

I knew I'd receive a constructive opinion eventually.

Looks good, better than the 5R anyway. Same old 5R stock aerial though.

Looks like the Emperors new clothes to me, flash the firmware, make it a bit shinier and rebrand it as a new radio when in fact it's the same old.

All Baofeng radios are awful and the world would be a better place without them.

Hope this helps. :)
