Modern Electronics FS2.1 446MHz intercom

Post by Minus1 »

These 446 MHz PMR base units with mains adaptors are the best looking such devices I've seen, but technical info on them is woefully lacking.

http://www.conrad-electronic.co.uk/ce/e ... s-Intercom

The stated "99 channels" makes no sense at all, based on 8 PMR frequencies.

Also on Amazon with less cost and even less info:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00652XSTM/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Electron ... 00652XSQ0/

The manufacturer (http://www.m-e.de/) doesn't bother to respond to enquiries (even if you send them in German, verdammt).

Has anybody tried these?

Some manufacturers claim over 100 channels by adding up the combinations of frequencies and ctcss (privacy codes).

Yes, I know, but my point is that 99 (nor 100) is not divisible by 8!
12 CTCSS codes would be 96 'channels', 13 would be 104.

I see, I never gave much thought to confirming any of their claims, most of the FRS handhelds also claim over 20 miles.

Maybe 99 is the preset amount.

Midland PMR
◾99 pre-set channels
◾38 sub-channels (CTCSS)

The manufacturer website is here [m-e.de]

They appear to be capable of mains-powered operation. That is interesting, I seem to remember Ofcom didn't like the idea of that a while ago. This might break new ground in the field of PMR446 being permanently connected to a mains supply. So now we have a theoretical combination of:

Mains capable 446 radio here [m-e.de];

Removable antennae are sort-of OK [ofcom.org.uk]

Now that these two factors are in the wild, all we need is (Radio Ga-Ga... sorry) someone to make a CE marked rig with an external PSU connector, and an antenna that could be removed by the end user.

hmmmmmmm

[edited for grammer being rubbish]

I've found the manual [m-e.de]. It's in about 5 languages, but there is an English bit.

There is definitely an external power socket. As far as I'm aware, this is a first for a PMR446 device. It also is CE marked.

It has an external speaker socket, but no external mic. There is a VOX function though.

True Intek had a similar version.

I like the look of these 446 wireless intercoms, they fill a gap in the market and look like something you would install without looking like a radio :geek: nerd. Who knows, might encourage a few people to get more interested in radio
