Clearly the simpletons who designed and marketed the radio do not know the difference between what a band is and what a mode is.
You sure about that?

If I can find my old 49.860 MHz AM Minicoms, I may offer them up for sale on here if anyone's interested :)
Any takers?

Charge him 400 quid postage. Found in loft, sold as seen, no returns due to screwdriver heroes etc.

This thread, along with others, makes me laugh.

Same old story, trawl through the Ofcom allocation list, find a frequency that's licence free, then start considering the possibilities of using it for voice with 50w when it's a data only allocation at 0.0001w.

If you and your mate want to buy a couple of type approved baby monitors from Mothercare and have a QSO with them over 100 yards then fine, otherwise, stop messing about and get yourself a ticket.

But messing about is the fun part!

I agree that using opened up amateur rigs or modified commercial transceivers is not really sporting, especially on a band with 10mW or less EIRP.
But modifying the baby monitor in question to have an external antenna and maybe a tiny "kicker", that's all fun and games.

Yes and no.

Messing about 49 megs with "opened up" Yaesu - no.

Messing about 49 megs with butchered baby monitor (no "kicker") or hacked walkie talkie - why not?
Resistance is futile.

To me it sounds like it's in the ham spirit to experiment and try to get the best out of limited equipment :)

I think I have a couple of old 49 mhz walkie talkies somewhere in the house I'll have to hunt them out and see if they still work, they had two channels A&B and a switch for squelch, and an telescopic aerial nearly a metre long.

I bought one of these for £30 a few years back. NIce set but the price they are asking is a bit steep. Has a long antenna and 100mw output.
