No they are not the same. These are UHF programmable radios that can operate in both Analogue and Digital mode.
They are digital but use a completely different encoding technique as airwave.

Kirisun will give you an insight in to Digital comms but they don't get very good reviews given their poor error correction.

409 shop are constantly upgrading their stock and IMO it's worth waiting until a better incarnation of a digital radio comes on the scene.

And as ever, they have gotten the person with the smallest hand in the World to hold it for the pic, they are the same size as the Boafengs etc, ie tiny, so don't expect a full sized handie to show up.

Yeah don't buy them. The range was like half or less of that of analog FM on a UV-5R. The radios themselves are just poor. They're rubbish on analog too, so its not just the digital error correction.

You can't scan as far as I'm aware. You just programme the 16 channels. Someone correct me if i'm wrong

They're not that good for scanning, since they are desensed easily by any nearby transmitters.

If you want an airwave radio then undoubtedly the best one to buy is the Motorola MTH800. The 380-430MHz version can be expanded to work up to 440MHz therefore within the 70cm ham band.

No you cannot listen to the police. Also bear in mind these are designed to work on the airwave network, much like mobile phones with linked masts everywhere. I believe running back to back they can only transmit at about 1W or so
