Motorola PMR for DXing

Hi all

I have the Chance of getting a Motorola XTR446 or a Motorola Talkabout TA-200.
The question is has anyone had any luck with eather radio for DX work if so what are your views on the radio

Thanks in advance for any advice given

These are ok radios not my favourite but they are fine for normal use.

I have the action 950, which is a slightly older model, and I also find that very good. The sensitivity is good in my opinion, and the modulation is nice and loud if you use it correctly.

DX for PMR446 is 5 miles.

If conditions are right then it doesn't matter what you use.

Modding the antenna is a far better method of improving range than modding power.

5w into a stock antenna isn't as good as 0.5w into a decent antenna.

If your whole radio life is centered around 446 DX then it will be a lonely journey.

I'd have to recommend against the Motorola Talkabout TA-200 though. My family had some that we tried to use for skiing, and they didn't work half as well as the action 950s. The TA-200s are very early PMR446 technology so they're not very sensitive at all.
