Turns out they were gliders running out of a small grass field that sits on a ridge where the A6075 meets the A57 (Notts i think)...
Nothing was heard on VHF apart from Waddo radar an various just the gliders talking to each other an the ground on two 466 channels (2 and 8)both using sub tone 4.....

Anyone else heard this lot ? Seems unreal in this day an age they are using toy town radios for comms.....?
Can see the field on Google Earth but nothing named
If it's "toy town comms" then why are you so interested in scanning it ? ;-)

On a serious note though, maybe they are using some decent handies rather than
a pair of Binatone blister pack rigs and are quite happy with the performance.

These dang Bowfangs get everywhere ;-)

My gliding club has never deployed their parachutes since they opened 30 years ago. Based on your logic, sailors don't have faith in what they're doing too as they all carry life jackets and lifeboats

The use of PMR446 instead of proper airband radios by glider pilots wanting to save cost can be deadly if one pilot strays too near another airfields and doesn't radio in their location/heading/height on the gliding frequencies..
hmm here in Austria the have there own Freq. for that.
The other part is the Gov. want 10€ per Aircraft Band Radio (inside an Aircraft maybe for Glider to) and PMR cost 0...
So 120€ + XX€ for Ground vs. 0€ per Year for PMR

Marine and Air communications require the user to take an exam, which isn't tough, just expensive. Most glider pilots have an airband radio to talk to the important people for safety and comms, but like balloon pilots, talking to a ground crew is pretty important for the practical things, like landing in random places and needing pickup, so doing this with airband isn't that handy - the person on the ground may well be a friend/stranger who can operate a 446 radio, but not the airband ground station. There are always going to be idiots, but far less of them in the country than the towns and cities. In the current OFCOM PMR446 guidance there is no mention of aeronautical operation, so using them in an aircraft would appear to be permitted.
