Icom "IP Advanced Radio System" - IP100H WiFi hand-held
see http://hamgear.wordpress.com/2014/01/10 ... ansceiver/
Looks interesting!
Sounds like it needs WiFi infrastructure to work, can't run simplex back-to-back?

Always wondered a few years back if this would happen.

Interesting.
We run about 25 x 5.8 GHz links over an area of around 1000 square km. Some have absolutely no GSM coverage, but plenty coverage over our own network. These might be just the ticket for the guys on the masts to be able to speak back to base. Some of the sites are not line of sight, so UHF's don't work.
The only concern is that we don't have WIFI on the sites, and the links are PTP rather than PTMP, so we might need access points at each site instead of communicating directly over the backhaul.

What is the point its another solution with no problem !
I have had the Linksys version for some years and the range is crap more like 20 ft so they are OK as long as you can see the person you want to talk to.
And as for roaming yes as long as all the access points have same SSID and passcode

Problem = up a comms tower trying to line up a microwave link with no UHF backlink!Bogget wrote:What is the point its another solution with no problem !

Solution = Wifi at the bottom of the tower, or ability to jump onto the backhaul!
Cheaper than Satphone!
Brilliant! Where can we buy them?

Typical, not yet commercial reality....
Oh well, back to the sat phones. And the spark gap transmitters in 500 kHz.....

ICOM emailed to ask what availability is. Would be a brilliant conception. Business radio over 1000 km2 with no licencing and LoS over UHF problems!

you can get several voip handsets but trust me if your at the top of a tower your out of range if the wifi is at the bottom how is it better than a UHF handheld or mobile phone or one that combines both like this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Outfone- ... 87239.htmlWindy_Miller wrote:Problem = up a comms tower trying to line up a microwave link with no UHF backlink!Bogget wrote:What is the point its another solution with no problem !

Only has a 100mw output power. I doubt it will have much range on that wavelenthg with that power. I would prefer to use the baofeng uv 5r radio on pmr446. If the internet goes down or if there is a power cut then this radio will become useless while the PMR radios will still remain functional.

Re: Icom "IP Advanced Radio System" - IP100H WiFi hand-held
I would imagine that something like this would be aimed at sites with an existing WiFi infrastructure and a need for something approximating a traditional PTT radio system.
These would allow the site operator to provide such a service without the costs associated with spectrum licensing and while utilising existing infrastructure and IT staff instead of investing in additional equipment and skills.
I'm sure they would work well in such an environment.
