Group Mode Motorola

Post by FIREWIRE »

Hi

I have the Motorola TLKR T8

The Motorola TLKR T8 will communicate with any two way radio OR when put into its special group mode, it will only communicate with an other TLKR

Do any other brands have a group mode?
Can they speak to us in our group mode ?

Ps I have tested another pair of TLKR T8 and they can talk to us in group mode.

I'm guessing "group mode" is Motorola marketing bullshit speak for what us normal folks call CTCSS/DCS.

These are basically selective squelch systems using either an analogue tone or digital code, respectively, that is added to the transmission - when switched on, the receiving radio will only respond to a signal that carries the relevant tone/code and will not open the squelch to a plain carrier. This allows several user groups to "share" a single frequency without constantly hearing each others' transmissions. It does not (despite some vendors calling them "privacy codes") provide any security or scrambling to your communications, as a radio on the same frequency with the system disabled will receive all transmissions that are within range.

These systems are available on a wide range of radios and will work regardless of brand, provided you can work out the correct setting for each radio (not all vendors use the same numbers for the same tones/codes).

You can read more about both systems here;

Thank yoy for your knowledge.

What I understand is Motorola mean, in addition to the ctcss and dcs, the group mode simply lets the Motorola t8 talk to another t8 (or perhaps any motorola). My oregon scentific can hear the group mode convos but i cant join in the convos.
Eg
Motorola TLKR T8 set to Channel 8 sub code 38
And
Oregon Scientific set to Channel 8 sub code 38

I can hear the motorolas a but when I try talking they can't hear me. This includes if I'm in the same room.

I can't hear any compression etc. Does motorola still use that on the TLKR series? I remember that on the motorola T6222.

You would have to do a CTCSS and DCS scan to see what they are using but as said above it only means your in the same CTCSS or DCS group so any DCS or CTCSS radio(depending on which they are using) can talk to them.

It's quite possible ctcss tones are not always the same between different makes.

So 38 on one handset might be a different ctcss tone on another make.

Very true Chinese radios are usually one out and sometimes have an extra code that only Chinese radios have.

option 2

How high does your CTCSS go 108? there are many more CTCSS and DCS than usually available on most none Chinese radios.

And i quote:-
"In conventional FM two-way radio systems, the most common form of selective calling is CTCSS, which is based on a sub-audible tone. One implementation of this system is by Motorola and is called Private Line, or PL. Radios made by nearly any manufacturer will work acceptably with existing systems using CTCSS. The system allows groups of radios to remain muted while other users are talking on the channel. In business and industrial systems, as many as 50 sets of users could share the same channel without having to listen to calls for each other's staffs. In government systems, users can avoid having to hear users outside their own agency. (Government channels are usually separated by distance between user groups. Only one local user group is assigned to a channel.)"

Nuff said
