I had a look on this link below. It looks like there is a nice big hill near legoland, which is quite near your location of UB7 that is shown in your profile. You should be able to reach quite far from there.

That site is good for checking the distance and terrain between two points.
another good one is cloudRF, but it only allows you to map up to 10km for free. To get more you have to buy credits.

However, it should still give a good enough indication of where you might be able to reach from a particular location.

I've never managed to contact anyone on these nets, but I have only tried unmodified radios with their standard rubber ducklings.

What would be classed as a decent altitude for the PMR446 net?

I've been looking on Google Maps using the elevation reading at the bottom to check the altitude of high spots around me.

According to Google Earth, my residence is at al altitude of 26m and I have found ground reading from 60m - 75m nearby.

I'll be listening whole day around the Somerset area. I always hear a couple of CT members around here on Sundays, though I've never been able to make contact. (They can't seem to hear me, only my "call alert" tone)

Hey all is this channel 8 with no CTCSS?

Do people stick to the standard spec or maybe make an innocent error with their set?

Anyone holding a net in the York area tonight? I got a strong signal on 6 from a chap talking about Sirio antennas while driving along the western ring road. Sadly this was on the 125xlt so I couldn't chip in. They moved to chan 5 then I lost the chap at Rufforth.
