Zastone Mini9+ seems to tick all the boxes:

About £40 a pop.
2W/0.5W output, USB charging, fiddle-proof controls [hopefully]. I think with the 0.5W output it might even be legal as well!
The manual comes in what must be my favourite file format ever, a pile of JPEGs with chinese filenames that unrar chokes on [7Zip was fine]:

From one of those tedious "unboxing" videos it looks like it emits an annoying low battery message every 10s once it gets down to 25%. Hmm. Not so sure any more...

Re: DMR446 radio to give to the kids
Personally I just use these. I have programmed them with the PMR freqs only.
They are cheap to replace, easy to use and work alright. ideal for the kids to use IMHO. Ideal for the kids checking back to you on a camp site or similar or shouting them back for food etc. brilliant for them to play with amongst themselves too. :-)
£18.89 delivered from a UK vendor for a pair. few more quid for the programming cable. Job done

Also from the same video, the charging plug might be USB-shaped but it's 4.2v so it's not really USB. Another one for the "Hmm" list.

Me too, I think they're great for the price. Did you know they do them in different colours too - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Origina ... 72273.htmlMrWeetabix wrote: ↑21 Jun 2018, 12:47 Personally I just use these. I have programmed them with the PMR freqs only.

Re: DMR446 radio to give to the kids
These radios work remarkably well by any standards. There is a school that is 2 - 3 miles away as the crow flies from me that has purchased a load of them. They have been programmed with a mixture of 446 and 'other' frequencies shall we say. Hard to believe the signal strength I get some days from them!MrWeetabix wrote: ↑21 Jun 2018, 12:47 Personally I just use these. I have programmed them with the PMR freqs only.

Re: DMR446 radio to give to the kids
I almost bought 2 of these back in 2011 for a camping trip to America to use on FRS but I didn't order them because I wasn't sure I'd get them in time but would have been nice to have over there plus I could program in a police frequency too RX only as some police forces were or still are using analog over there. I own a about 4 of these 888s now and there not bad radios for the price.

TYT MD-430 aka Radioddity GD-73 looks pretty good and it has USB charging as well which is a bit more "family friendly". £60 a pop though...I was briefly excited when I first saw them as I thought that was for a twin-pack. Hopefully they'll come down in price a bit.
