Back to back repeater

Post by minus273degrees »

Has anyone tried linking 2 cheap radios speaker to mic with tx rx offset to make a repeater? I wonder how much extra ground could get out of it. I spend a lot of time in the welsh hills might be interesting to try

In fact - many smaller commercial repeaters are actually two hand=held radios inside - connections just tagged to the circuit board, covered in sealer. They usually have a small pcb that manages the difference between audio levels, and use the receive indicator - maybe an LED, or a display element, to switch it into transmit. Those crossband adaptors do similar things, but usually use a Vox circuit to put it into transmit that can behave a little unpredictably. Performance wise - the main problem is desensitisation - the transmit frequency making the receiver a bit deaf - but the wider the spacing the better. If you put one of these on top of the mountain - the range can be quite impressive.
