US amplifiers.

Post by sureshot »

Been looking at the US style of building pill linear amplifiers. Having seen many builds on FB groups and watched numerous tube videos on it, I'm somewhat tempted to have a go.
Im not 100% sure if these class of amps are ssb only, or do they run am and fm as well ?
The deal breaker might be my equipment, or lack of specific needed equipment.
It looks for all the world like two parallel planes, one the base to heatsink ground, and anything above that on cut pieces of board for the + volts side. And what looks like point to point wiring. Not being sure, but heard these are generally class C amplifiers.
Any tips or literature from anyone knowing sites that have good schematics would be appreciated.
It would probably take a period of time to complete any such project due to life events.
But I'd certainly like to give it a go.
Few questions, why don't they use linear amplifiers like ours in the US ? It looks exclusively like they run these aluminium enclosure homebrew amplifiers.
Any advise appreciated.
I can see RF transistor sources being a possible problem in the UK. Most of the retail sellers i use for components don't stock much RF components, aside from a few high current fets.
I'm only thinking in terms of one or two pill at most size amplifiers, none of this 16 to 48 pill stuff lol.
Thanks for reading.

I guess there not popular amps in the UK, i have heard the term used "dirty C class amps" can't remember where i heard it, from a local breaker maybe. No idea how good or bad they are. I know the US breakers fall over there selfs for the big aluminium boxes with switches and leds.
But they do look interesting and i find the construction technique of these units appealing.

Xforce makes a good amp here in the US.he makes class C for basically AM only up to AB amps that are clean and work good on SSB.
here is the link to his web site.

C class is for FM only. AM and SSB need AB.

When did Class C become suitable for AM?

NA or EU market?
Zetagi B300, B550, KL203 are class AB amps for example.

guy's are using the class C amps on AM over here a lot since they are cheaper. I have seen a few guys run them on SSB also. they will have a delay when they start to talk on SSB with this amp.

Yes splatter boxes, I've heard that mentioned. The more I watch the tube videos on constructing these the more I want to try it.
I think I need a refresh on amplifier classes.

Because they are dumb as hell.
Amp makers too. It is not that expensive to add bias, but you need to have brain and knowledge, not just copycat.

It looks to me that the amps don't create splatter, depends on the radio use and how much distortion its putting out. I rather clever fellow from the US on the tube explained the misconceptions people have on interference that is transmitted. The amplifier just ramps up the splatter from the radio.

You need to learn some amplifier basics from better source than YT wannabe amp makers.
