1st stupid question!!!

Post by teddyt » 06 Apr 2017, 18:46

Guy's I have just picked up a Standard C5200ed duel channel mobile rig.
All seems like it works as it should but before I rush out and buy a good aerial, is there a (very) cheap way of testing it works rx/tx not looking for reach just to see if it does the job?? I have a boefang uv 82 with which to test it .
so any ideas .... long length of wire etc????
Oh and be gentle with me I'm new

Dummy load for TX and just a bit of wire for RX with your uv 82 quite close to it, however this will not test the radio over any distance and the only way of telling if it is any good on distant TX/RX is to use an antenna

Stuff 19" of any old wire (or even a coat hanger if it's not painted, into your aerial socket and that will work for 2m and 70. Probably best on low power of course - At a push, I've even used solder! Fine for a quick one two check.

Brings back memories. The one and only Standard radio I owned was its successor, the C5608D. It was an excellent radio and I used it mobile for a few years.

Good luck and enjoy using it.

I've changed radios that many times, I've forgotten what I have

Crikey, that is a blast from the past, the D version is obviously the 50 watt flavour, so don't be transmitting for too long with a mismatch. Sadly because of it's age it will be a bit limited these days, just a 1750hz tone and 25Kc steps, so not too useful for repeaters unless you are very lucky with your local one being on a 25Kc jump and having legacy 1750hz capability, or a whistle. The audio output is very strong from these sets and I know of a few that were converted to VHF marine band as they could be heard over the noise of general sea conditions and the 50w output was very welcome when bobbing about on the shores.
