Anybody know of some SSB QRP HF kits
Hi. I'm looking for some SSB QRP kits for HF.
I have been searching ebay but I've not found anything apart from those basic CW kits. I want to build a SSB QRP voice transceiver. My first choice would be something for 40 meters or 20 meters.
Has anybody got any ideas? I'd even be interested in building one from scratch.

Blasphemy.
You will be visited by three ghosts.
The first one - tonight - will be that of Geo Longden G3ZQS. The founding father of Fists.

I made a 7mhz dsb QRP rig based on the "WEE WILLY" design. This is not a kit but is quite simple to build. If you GOOGLE "WEE WILLY" you will find lots of links to it. Here is a link to a site with mods for it. http://www.qrp.pops.net/willy.asp If you want to see the one I made go to my youtube channel (kingkeygear)
If you want a kit the "SUDDEN" receiver is a very simple kit to start with and I think there is a matching transmitter kit.
You can also just Google "QRP" there is loads of simple stuff out there to build.
Have a look here http://www.gqrp.com/sudden.htm
Enjoy

Excellent this is just the kinda thing I'm looking for. I might add a frequency counter to it tookingkey wrote:I made a 7mhz dsb QRP rig based on the "WEE WILLY" design. If you get just a YES or NO answer it will mean either you should already know the answer or you have proved yourself incapable of understanding the answer. Also if you think I need to explain what I type then perhaps you should realise your own limitations

How easy or hard would you like it to be, I spoke to a chap during the week who had built, and was using, one of these:
http://www.radcomms.net/PicaStar.html
It really did sound very good indeed, equal to some of the top end rigs, but you'll need a bit skill to pull it off

Bump old thread.
Try BITX, it's SSB, simple and parts list quite short and tolerant on replacements(any low power HF NPN transistors). While ago i build both v1 and v3 BITXs, used my own design PCB, shrinked down to the postcard size.

Thru-hole is good, SMD is good as well, but boring.

There is *no* way I am googling thatkingkey wrote: If you GOOGLE "WEE WILLY"
Seriously though, GQRP is awesome and membership is dirt cheap, well worth joining if anyone is into homebrew QRP

This is one of the things i like about this site, its' diversity. Radio holds a great interest to me, in all its forms.
I need to get on and start with getting a licence sorted so i don't have to just listen anymore and i can experiment with more than just antennas

I've built mk3 20m and works as a treat. It's soo easy to put it together, and just one toroid to be wound. Mixer stage with this binocular type cores wasn't that bad either. Even that tiny linear isn't that bad.
I've started bitex multiband but this one broke my heart. All them toroids - best of luck sourcing it - finally got the full set but the thought of winding them all makes me sick. Pcbs are populated with the components in 99% but again - sourcing all of the components seem to be like mission impossible. Like with a black magic spell - you'll get the most mundane stuff sourced and done in no time but there must be one or two things that you'll doubt that they ever existed.
Oh yes, you could get the whole kit (sometimes) but that's cheating!
Apart from places like littlediode or qrpkits - where else would you get:
1st stage transistor, you know, this 2sc25something device
TOKO coils
Ferrite donuts, various types
Ade-1 mixers
Etc
Without being skinned alive? India perhaps.
And all of the above still before even coming near dds vfo, what would be the easiest part.
Anyone tried PicoStar & similar projects?
Resistance is futile.

Re: Anybody know of some SSB QRP HF kits
I used all 2SC1815GR-Y transistors, just didn't bother with something better. At least you can build radio and replace first stage later. TOKO coils for BPF? I used plastic coils, which i found in the drawer. Ferrites for mixers - bottomless cup cores from the coils that came from... sorry, can't remember, maybe TV mainboards or some sort of AM/FM broadcast receivers... Ah, i thnk from RF units(NES, MSX or ZX - there is a coil for sound subcarrier). For PA used ferrites from VGA cables. Switching diodes were 1N4148, i just tried to match them as close as possible. Assembled board is somewhere in the box and i will make and upload photo, when i find it.
