Hi,i`ve recently bought one of those Baofeng UV5 rc dual bands and i`ve been tinkering with a simple home-brew dipole made from a wire coathanger on a piece of wood with rg58 coax-only to receive! Works about as well as any other standard antenna, but i was hoping to modify it into a yagi type affair. What im not sure about and could use some help on this is; are the elements connected together with the dipole or are they simply there to draw waves into the dipole. What i mean is,are the earth elements connected electrically to the earth feed and vice versa to the live feed?
Im brand new at this so forgive my ignorance.
Also, spacing of elements is a major factor right? is there an equation or measurement for finding this out?
Bear in mind that its just for receive as i have no swr or atu for vhf/uhf.
Any help would be great....thanks!!

This is a handy site for simple homebrew yagi antennas.
http://www.qsl.net/w4sat/antlegn.htm
Remember that for FM the antenna has to be vertically polarised and will be very directional.
Alternatively you could build one of these,
http://home.comcast.net/~buck0/ll_coolj.html
This was the first vhf antenna I built and I still use it now.Mines taped to a fishing pole and mounted on the roof, good vswr and its omni-directional.....and cheap to build.
