A place to discuss the HF and Shortwave listening side of the radio hobby. Discuss equipment, frequencies and antenna systems etc. Anything HF!

Re Using an Alinco DX9 for Sw.

Hi,

Been offered an Alinco DX9 as part exchange.

Are these radios good for Shortwave ?

I only have a GM up ATM and wondered what sort of antenna would be best.

Many thanks

I have an Alinco DX-R8 (DX-R9 less transmitter) and it is IMHO a pretty got SW receiver.

For antenna then a simple long wire will get you up and running OK. I only have a long wire and for reception only then this will be fine. If however you plan on using the R9 as a transmitter as well then you will need either a band specific antenna. If you stick with a long wire then you will certainly need a good antenna tuning unit that will handle a long/random wire.
