Mini Whip.
With regards to the PA0RDT mini whip..
Does anybody use this.. wandering if it really does perform as well as it claims to be ?
I'me thinking about installing one on the chimney stack, well away from household noise etc.
Being an omnidirectional antenna, I'me thinking it may be worthwhile..
Radio World sell them for £99.00
Thanks..

I have no idea.
But, if you're okay with an iron, why not build your own for a lot less than a ton?

Re: Mini Whip.
In my experience they're noise magnets when used in built-up areas. Work well in electrically quiet locations away from buildings/houses. A T2FD or active wideband loop is much better choice unless you live in the countryside.M1ZXZ wrote:With regards to the PA0RDT mini whip..

£99.00 is a rip-off. Its a very basic design with a low part count.

Re: Mini Whip.
There is a guy from Poland sells the pcbs including the power feed pcb on Ebay, I've just built one total cost inc waterproof enclosure about £15. Just need to get it up on a pole now...

Any chance of a link please gosman? I searched for PA0RDT on eBay Poland and just got a load of Fiat spare parts.gosman767 wrote:There is a guy from Poland sells the pcbs including the power feed pcb on Ebay, I've just built one total cost inc waterproof enclosure about £15. For £15 I'd quite fancy a go at that, gotta be better to hang out of a hotel window than a telescopic.

If you want to experience on-line how the mini whip performs the webSDR at the University of Twente uses this aerial for VLF to just under 30 MHz coverage

Re: Mini Whip.
For £15 build it yourself, sounds ok.. If they prove to be too noisy then better off losing £15 than £99.
Gosman767 - Can you post some details, height location etc, your thoughts on how it be performed.
Would be interested to know how you got on with it..
For £15 just might be worthwhile. Thanks..

Re: Mini Whip.
The construction was simple, circuit diagrams on the sellers website, all components pretty easily sourced, (i've some spares if anyone else has a go). Packaged in a piece of water pipe (I think) that I had in shed. Not got it up yet, just bought 3 fibreglass poles from a fishing place at a £5 each that fit into each other, going to try it in garden about 5 metres from house but it will only be about 5 metrs high see how it works against my long wire, just an experiment really.
