Living close to raf marham / usaf lakenheath / usaf mildenhall / and norwich civil airport what type of antenna would i be best to mount on a pole outside 30 ft high ??? from MR GEORGE

Vertical dipole or GP.

Thanks Cris, BUT which sort of Vertcal dipole ( can i make my own if so what length ) What do you mean by a GP , would that be a ground plane antenna ?? From MR GEORGE

I can't tell the length without knowing what are bands/frequencies you are going to listen. GP means ground plane.

I assume you want to listen to the civil airband 118-136 and the mil airband 225-400
If you are close to the airports, and you can get it up 30ft as you say, then you will get reasonable reception with a ham dual band antenna, such as x30 or similar. Correctly tuned antenna would work better, but with location and the antenna height to your advantage, plus the airband comms are reasonable power, I reckon you'd hear plenty.

I have a couple of dipoles in the loft made from copper water pipe! They work a treat!
