Re: Aircraft voice comms will become a thing of the past
We have been able to communicate with aircraft for donkeys years digitally, I was installing ACARS links some 20 years ago, but I cant see the day ever when voice traffic will be replaced. Most airlines are too tight to upgrade their fleet with anything, not even 8.33 radio unless given a big incentive.

I agree with Tigersaw, there are no plans to replace voice comms on ATC with datalink or any other means. It will only happen when we get the technology 100% guaranteed safe to have pilotless aircraft for all uses.It will happen, but not in my lifetime.
You can never have enough radios!

Are they, not using DATA links going across to the US now and HF is now the backup.
they will need to keep some voice back up, I think Voice commutations will go down in the coming years but it will never go. We will be looking at a good 50 years I think yet before they think about it.
BUT! if the radio and DATA links are put in all new plains may be looking at 30 years.

DATA links only for positioning/altitude/latitute/longitude/fuel consumption/on board weight/engine running hours etc but not for what we currently hear on our scanners.
