I did, until it got superseded by technology. I used to have a coal fire with a back boiler, that's gone too.

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
So would you say that coal fires or back boilers have no purpose?
Should they now be outlawed and their owners criminalised simply because of the already illegal actions of a wreckless but tiny minority?
The printed word has also been superseded by technology and the printed word can certainly be used to cause harm and annoyance........ see where I'm going with this?

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
No, my coal fire and back boiler were extremely efficient as it happens, and significantly cheaper than my current gas bill in 2016. Much higher maintenance though, folk these days don't have half an hour spare to empty cinders and restoke a fire, far too busy drinking wine.
Laser pointers just don't sit into society, and the general age group of appeal is 10-20, used for driving cats mental chasing a red dot or shining into peoples windows to spook them.

A very closed view.Admiral wrote:I say again, they have no purpose other than to cause annoyance or harm.
They have plenty of uses other than to cause annoyance or harm.
I use one regularly when training people, playing with the cat or trying to down airplanes....
Obviously one of those is just sarcasm....

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
There's one in my laser level as well, and one in my mate's ultrasonic tape measure. I know some guys who have them attached to their Airsoft guns, plenty of people who still use them for presentations or pointing at the night sky and there must be dozens upon dozens of other legitimate uses for self conatained, hand portable lasers - including just plain fun!
If any of those people were to use one to dazzle another person, causing a temporary visual disturbance, then they would be guilty of causing Actual Bodily Harm using an offensive weapon. If there was any permanent effect then that offence would escalate to Grievous Bodily Harm. The law has plenty to work with there and we haven't even considered the implications of endangering the safety of passengers in a moving vehicle by targeting the "driver"...
If you want to reduce the number of laser incidents involving aircraft then the most sensible and proportionate response must surely be prosecuting to the full extent of the (existing) law and publicising this to discourage others.

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
What I struggle to understand is how someone on the ground can blind the pilots that are vertically above them with a plane between them.
The windows are on the top 1/2 of a roundish shaped body.
Are they hitting the wing mirrors or something?

they could easily be on an angle from the side, especially during the take off / landing phase

I think they mean the high power lasers rather than the type you would get in your laser level.

A 28 yr old guy got done last year for shining a green laser from his top floor flat in Cardiff at planes leaving Bristol airport and then at the Police helicopter, who tracked him down.Admiral wrote:Or in their Council flat on the 28th floor.MrWeetabix wrote:they could easily be on an angle from the side, especially during the take off / landing phase
He received a jail sentence of six months to be followed by a further six months from a previous suspended sentence he received in November 2014 for possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Not much chance of a mid-air collision at Marshalls, but he's still a knob, and £200 does seem a bit lenient.dcwuk wrote:http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Radio-i ... story.html
