Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
Only a few months ago, I read a story on one of the online newspapers (possibly the Daily Mail) about idiots using transceivers to try and pretend to be ATC.
Luckily as the story goes they where not correct with the lingo and the pilots sussed them out straight away.
Not certain how true the story is, but if true it is another example of how stupid this is.

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
When I was a CBer in my callow youth, there was a breaker of whom it was rumored that he tried to talk to an airplane on 6Mhz. His pirate gear was confiscated and he ended up with a conviction and fine. No idea if it was true but you never know.

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
Back in the early 80's there were a number of pirates off 6MHz who were caught and prosecuted. Fines and equipment confiscation. One of them is now a G0 but I am not sure if he is still active.
They were tracked down very rapidly apparently.
I dont think they were trying to talk to aircraft but they were pirating the aircraft section of that band. It was also claimed that they were advised to go on that band instead of pirating illegal cb as it was and this advise came from a DTI Interference Officer. (Buzby)
As I say a lot of other rumours abound, but I remember listening to one of the guys after he became licenced, and he openly claims that they were advised to operate on that band!
I would love to hear the full true version of that story!

Re: cheapest handheld to talk to the pilots
Why do you want to talk to pilots??? maybe I'm missing something here but is there a license or air band TX hobby that I've not heard off yet? Edit just read the other posts, it seems like a no brainier to want to talk to pilots, not to mention very dangerous.slayer666 wrote:i want to talk to the airoplanes what sort of price for a basic radio that can transmit and recieve on the vhf airband and what sort of distance could a handportable transmit to cheers in advance
