I get a lot of raf and army helicopters flying low directly over my house ( clevedon) flying north to south and vice versa, is it possible they are flying vfr and using the M5 as a guide?

What frequencies should I store in my scanner to try and hear them? or south west milair frequencies in general?

At low level, London Mil freqs will be of no relevance.

They may contact any civilian airfield if they pass close to their zone.

Your best bet is to hope for more than one heli travelling together, and find any air to air freq.
Apart from the usual VHF & UHF airbands, these can be at odd VHF Low freqs (anything from roughly 30 to 55 MHz FM)
They are also reported to use freqs in the mil bands within 68-87.5 MHz, though I've never heard anything here.

You might sometimes hear a Polycon (intercom) transmission from the heli. Try around 417/419/449 MHz FM (12.5k steps)

If they are overhead Clevedon they will probably be transiting VFR through or under Bristol CTA to and from the Yeovilton AIAA. Clevedon is actually a VRP (Visual Reference Point) for Bristol.

With this in mind they will probably be talking to Bristol Radar or Bristol LARS. Bristol frequencies listed below....

Radar - 136.075
LARS - 125.650
Tower - 133.850
ATIS - 126.025

There was two military helicopters flying over Cumbria late last night, the lead helicopter had no strobe lights active and was in total darkness I only just noticed it due to the glow of the moon. Another helicopter was trailing very close to this one and was fully illuminated via its strobe lights, I assume they were practising night vision tactics and being monitored by the illuminated helicopter.

I heard one today talking to bristol discusing visual references and landing where I work at the docks then calling back once they cleared avonmouth docks.

Didnt get a call sign as he was under 2000ft and was quite crackly
