long range commecial freqs ?

Post by gmham »

Guys, on a flight from tenerife to edinburgh the other day we were advised that the pilot had received reports from scottish control that there was possibly going to be bad weather comming back into edinburgh ( nothing new there then and yes it was a bit scary at times !! ) now this message was received several hundred miles prior to landing and we were still obviously at a fair old height, question is what long range freqs would be used for covering commerical flights for this type off conversation before the local edinburgh atc would take over ??

would flights from the likes off tenerife etc be likely to speak back to the uk whilst still in spain ??

Several hundred miles is no big deal, usual to pick up high level aircraft 250 miles away if you have line of sight reception.

And don't forget that Scottish Control covers an area as far south as the line between the Mersey & Humber (170 miles south of Edinburgh).

Plus aircraft heading into that area are often transfered to Scottish a fair distance distance before they actually get to the boundary.

Long range frequencies not required. At Scottish Control they have planning displays that list all the airfield TAFs and METARs. The guys at London Control will also have this info and the controllers in Spain are only a phone call away ;)

^ Yes, long haul aircraft especially those crossing the Atlantic are fitted with HF sets. A station in Ireland monitors, relays and controls Atlantic HF.

Had a talk from an ATC Watch Manager (Gatwick, now Heathrow) - VERY interesting!!!

A few years ago when I had my yupi 7100 and a long wire I used to listen to Concorde and others using the Gander sector before they flew the east route back to the UK.
