Aircraft Jargon
I have heard planes broadcast their position and add "with X-ray", or another letter in the phonetic alphabet. What does this letter signify?

Re: Aircraft Jargon
I think they are referring to the version of ATIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_ ... on_Service) that they are working with. These are "numbered" sequentially using the phonetic alphabet Alpha, Bravo etc with the latest version taking the next letter in the sequence.

Re: Aircraft Jargon
I keep hearing pilots say two things:
1) Sounds like "Channick". Could it be "Shannick" meaning "Shanwick"?
2) Goodwood - is this a reference to Goodwood airport near Chichester?

Goodwood is a VOR DME navigation aid. You may also well hear reference to Southampton, Midhurst, Ockham, Seaford, Mayfield, London, Bovingdon, Lambourne, Detling, Daventry, Dover, Clacton, Compton, Manchester, erm and others

LOL at the vids. Yes, some of the RT does seem incomprehensible and I wonder what they make of it at air traffic control. I once heard a pilot wondering aloud if an attractive member of the flight crew could be sent to the cabin. I think it was banter between several planes parked up at LBA. Similarly, things get a bit more informal on the night shift at the local prison.
Ah, many thanks. I did try Googling before I posted but either info is thin on the ground or I just don't know where to look.Goodwood is a VOR DME navigation aid...

Yep, the letter signifies which ATIS information they have. Obviously if it is an outdated one we will update them with any changes.

Without hearing it, it could possibly mean Shanwick as it Shanwick control or could it be Channex which is the callsign for Jet 2.com

You don't know how right you are! It's excellent! I had discussed this with Glamdring ages ago on here when we had a heavy snowfall, the aircraft were holding over Peebles whilst efforts were made to clear the runway to have them land.MrWeetabix wrote:A good thing to watch whilst listening to Aircraft is http://www.flightradar24.com, an excellent resource :-)
I watched on FR24 and listened on scanner but as Glamdring did point out, excellent for us aviation fans, but a PITA for ATC staff.

Re: Aircraft Jargon
How is it a PITA for them? :-/
Also, you will hear aircraft which do not show on FR24, as they dont have the equipment for transmitting the info, such a light aircraft and some of the smaller commercial operators (FlyBe I noticed into EGNT)
