You need to enable 'Promiscuous mode' to hear private and unprogrammed talkgroups.

I have the original experimental firmware from va3xpr, but at 5.5Mb it's too big to attach here, if you're desperate for it then I can upload it somewhere.

That no longer seems to have the firmware that stan is looking for, this one is about 15 months old now.

You should not loose any programmed frequencies when installing firmware but it's always safe to make a back up first.

You will only receive missed calls if you've cloned a radio id that was receiving a private call which isn't need with promiscuous mode. I don't know why you're not receiving private calls because i receive them just fine with the latest firmware. If you intercept a private call it will show on screen "Private Call".

I compile the firmware myself because firmware compiled by other people do not disable the test functions ( sms_test() on key 1 ) which isn't needed for regular users and regardless of TX disabled it still sends the test message so if your listening to calls and accidentally press key 1 on your radio it will transmit the message "md380tools rulez" which will be seen by the system and they will know it's being listened to and may start enforcing encryption.

You say the old firmware does not seem to be over written? It may be releated to: https://github.com/travisgoodspeed/md38 ... issues/645

If you look in netmon "Press # key" a private call will show as "cs U sender->receiver" if you see anything else then it's not a private call if you do not see anything that says "cs" then it's not a voice call or you have the wrong colour code.

Good info danny, but any earwigger that has a repeater input programmed in too is a bit of a mug.

"any earwigger that has a repeater input programmed in too is a bit of a mug" You're 100% right.

Some people do program inputs and will assume that with TX disabled they are safe from transmitting when they are not.

Just like how some people are lazy and can't be arsed learning to program their own radios and choose to download codeplugs and blame the radio when things go wrong.

TX disabled was obviously an issue with the original firmware about two years ago, that's why most sensible people use a UK Light or PMR446 frequency for the TX on a repeater channel in case the bug manifests in hacked stuff too, and also as you say for test applications and for people with more than one handset and hear their mate shouting on one set, and accidently pick up the set that's monitoring Shopwatch and give him a shout back.

Just for the record, I have stuck the new firmware on mine for the hell of it and I still get private calls.
