Yeasu FT- 7800 / 8800 programming problem

Post by cybermostyn »

Hi All,

i have tried Several cables to program my FT 8800 and a Friends 7800 but every time i plug a cable into the port on the back of the radio it puts the radio into TX and the only way to stop it is to remove the cable does anyone have a know what causes this? its only happened recently and it happens if you plug the usb plug in or not my brain is completely fried on this.

what programming software are you using, there was a free version kicking around that causes problems when using.

If the problem occurs without the USB plug on the programming cable connected to the computer, then it can't be related to the software...

Where did you get the cables from? I notice that you said you had tried more than one, so this is a bit weird, but it must be something to do with that. One of the pins in the socket on the back of the radio that you connect the cable to is for PTT - I think that you ground this pin to make the radio TX, so my guess would be the cable is not wired up correctly.

Actually - just had a thought. That socket is also used to route audio in and out of the radio for data modes.

I wonder if a voltage appears on the data in pin and VOX is enabled on the radio, if that would cause it to TX?

Not sure, but I think the 7800 has VOX... worth checking and disabling if it is enabled. :)

Cheers both for the replies. i am not sure what the problem is but yes Kr0ne as you say it doesnt matter if the usb is connected or not i am going to put a multimeter on it and check the pins once i dig out the scematic for it the most confusing thing for me is its on 2 different models at the same time talk about frying ones brain....

Check for a dead short between any two pins and also between each pin and the screen of the plug...

Grounding the PTT pin will cause the rig to TX, but the fact it happens with more than one cable suggests something other than a faulty cable.

i am using software from http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ (hope admins dont mind me posting the link)

i have always used his software although IT IS NOT a software problem as i tried it without the computer connected i have also tried 3 different cables from 2 different suppliers what is strange is that it is happening on 2 different radios :/ but thanks again for the replies i will take a look at it when i get chance and update the thread on my findings :D

Hehe, don't worry about it. There probably wasn't anybody posting about being chuffed to reach Australia for the first time on a loft antenna that day that he could pooh-pooh!
