Measure SWR, that you will know if antenna is too long or too short.

You can tune antenna in a free space, than put on it's place.
If no obstacles in proximity and not too close to the ground it gonna work.

As someone who uses this very antenna would personally say give it a miss unless you have already bought one ? For the money the are a bargain, work well are very sturdy but despite generous waterproofing on my part the swr is up and down daily even with no rain !! This is similar to the finding off a few others I have spoke to and funny enough is mentioned within the couple off reviews on eham.net.

If going ahead the only advice I can give is totally weatherproof every single joint and this will help the little screws working loose . Swr wise.. for me the swr guide supplied with it was totally out. I spent a few hours up and down the ladder adjusting the swr to get it down to 1.5 on 28.300mhz and then its either steady at this or way up depending on how it felt that particular day !!

Sirio 827 is raved about and if you can get one then personally would get one over the gpe27 5/8 wave . It's next on my ever increasing buying list !!

In all honesty as good as they are personally would keep the imax2k. There are others that are well happy with the sirio and as I say for the money they are a good buy but from personal experience off using one would give it a miss if you can't easily access the re-tuning off it every other day !!

You say you are "fed up with fibreglass antennas" but don't give an explanation of your fed-up-ness,I have used a S.g.m,827 in the past, and at present an Imax,I am far from fed up with my Imax, just saying.

I found the GPE 27 to be a great antenna, but you do need to put PVC tape over the jointing sleeves.

In the instructions there is a SWR chart for setting the length of the top section.

We installed four of these antennas locally and every time the SWR was correct if set according to the chart.

I just took mine down after 4 years in the air due to me going QRT for a while. No evidence of water ingress. But the plastic rivet things which hold the black insulator part to the pole clamp have gone brittle and broken. It looks to be an easy repair if they are drilled and M8 nylon bolts put through.
