Re: What's your fave old school multimode radio
Are we talking pre frequency readout? If so I have to nominate the trusty old Cobra 148 GTL-DX. They were always a good performer, especially if you managed to pick up a non modded radio. Unfortunately in the 80's and 90's most of them were modified to hell and tweaked to death by the golden screwdriver brigade.
I do however have a soft spot for the Multimode 2. They (and the other Cybernets) had a strong receive on SSB but suffered with bad channel rejection as a result.
Of frequency display is permitted it's got to be the President George. A radio years ahead of its time. Definitely the best looking of the President radio's and very well built. I still have the same George I bought new from Knights in 2001. Won't part with it.

Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!
Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...

148/3900 but did like the 160ch Colt Excalibur Ssb hombase.
Plenty are talking worldwide on 27.555 usb,
Some are too far up their own @rse to admit it,
Many happen to know otherwise dx-ing test free,
Showing a complete lack of respect for the law.

Mobile-wise - MM3. Never owned one but always wanted to as it had sooo many controls on it. There's a nice one on scambay at the mo but could never afford it.
Homebase-wise - Marko Excalibur, but had to settle for a very similar Petrusse Excalibur but it has more blocks so it's a bonus.

*above*
I had a Ham Int MM3 that was as-new in the box as the owner brought it by mistake! Cost £150 back in the day and I have to say for a MM it was OK - had lots of fun with it including its oddly counting down channels, but other than that it served me well for a long time. Had a (13) 148 and a 2830 as well but I had a penchant for the MM3.

If I ever had one, I'd probably send it to Nick to have a PIC thing fitted to sort the channel weirdness out then

My Petrusse Excalibur is one that Nick had his hands in for the previous owner from on here. I can't fault its operation and I wouldn't have been able to handle not having ukfm on it which he'd done too.
It looks the biz and stopped my craving for a nice Marko mk3, but it's a shame there's no bugger around to talk to

Still looking out for a SS 3900f .
Was offered a black 3900 e but didn't take it. But the F just draws me.

Jacko , yes I must say I do like the Jackson 1. Didn't they do a 6 band version too ?.
I just have this thing about the ss with frequency counter on.
Having variable ssb output would be nice too

Re: What's your fave old school multimode radio
PC-999 Grant,
Simon (Mudslinger) put me on to them a few years back when reading one of his posts and I have to agree they are truly an excellent rig.
ST9-FDX comes in a close second, both are very stable on SSB (based on other rigs around at that time). Limited in frequency coverage and lacking KC shift – or at least one offering a decent wide range but nevertheless both Grant and Stalker are my favourites.
I have a 146 GTL that needs repairing, and think that also may prove to be a great little rig.
I can’t bear listening to the receiver audio from a Cybernet on SSB these days, they hurt my ears but I always thought they sounded better on AM than the Uniden stuff.
Just wished conditions to the far-flung parts of the globe would start pouring through the speaker again…….
