Sirio gpe27 questions ?

Post by gmham »

Guys just bought myself a Sirio GPE27 and looking for a bit off advice :

1/ Have used good quality waterproof tape over each join which in itself will hopefully prevent the small screws holding each section from rattling out ! Have heard off a few users reporting the swr increasing when the antenna is wet so any other waterproofing required at the base off the antenna or at the tuning rod ?

2/ This tuning rod doesn't half rattle about !! anything to do to stop it ?

3/ The 3 base radials .. I take it they just sandwich between the base and the extra base plate ? I see from the picture off the antenna at which angle they sit but not 100% sure if they just sit next to the screws ?

Thanks guys. John

I would get rid of screws which are used on radiating element and I would use ss hose clamps or better screws with nuts through the pipe.

Yep thanks mate you did mention before when talking about the gpe27 to use as hose clips.to be honest everything seems nice and tight and secure just now especially with the HDbtape but will keep an eye on it after a few months off our great British summer !!

I went through this in the past, but as you wish...
Tape will protect screws from falling down, but won't give good electrical contact between each pipe.
Bad engineering or cost reduce, whatever. That should be done right.

Mine has been up 4 years now with just the orignal self tappers covered with tape and no issues. if ther was a problem I would drill right through and use a M3 screw (In stanless) and a nyloc nut on the other side.

I don't like the idea of cutting the ends and using hose clips.

Yes the radials just sandwich between the base and the plate.

Cheers Simon, take it apart from the extra waterproofing on the joins there was no extra waterproofing required at the base or anywhere else such as the top tuning whip ? Looking again at the extra base plate it has a triangle shape on it, do the radials follow the lines off this triangle .. not sure if it matters as long as they are making contact with the rest off the antenna ?! Does your own one change swr much with the rain ? Any pics off yours up / what height you got it at ?

No waterproofing needed. Drill small hole at the bottom to allow water flow out.

I taped up every join including the top adjustable whip join, there should be a hole in the base for drainage already which I didn't tape up.

The radials follow the creases in the metal plate.

I have no problems with SWR in the rain, in fact it has been remarkably stable over the 4 years it has been up.

I have it mounted on a 20 foot pole bolted to the garage, I would like it higher but I don't think the wall is strong enough.

That's great Simon thanks for that very helpful. Again if you do have a couple off pics you could fwd off your own installation then that would be great to see. John

Argh new Sirio gpe27 5/8 wave been working fine with low swr until today when we had our first bout off rain and yep swr checked and it's now much higher. Paid particular attention to the waterproofing off the joints off the antenna and antenna connectors also very well protected. Obviously rain is getting in somewhere, anyone any suggestions ?
