The 10m Cobra 148 GTL-DX mk1

Post by cb4ever104 »

Hi All .

Was speaking to Nick last week about a mk1 148 GTL-DX that I picked up. When I first started testing it I thought that someone had been messing about with the crystals . My MID was on LOW . HI was on MID , and my HI band was on 10m . Looking at the solder side everything looked clean , which baffled me a bit . Anyway . Turns out after talking to Nick that some mk1 148s were made that way . With 10m on the HI band (17.010 crystal fitted) .

To be honest I haven't had many mk1s through the years , and I never knew this . Actually , this might only be my 2nd , or 3rd :) So . I was just wondering . When did Cobra switch from this configuration to the more standard LOW/MID and HI that we all know and love . Does anyone know ? I know it was 1980 sometime , but it must have kicked off from a serial number .

I'll need to check mine again when I get back , but I think it was in the first 3000 , or so .

Not sure about the MK1 148 GTL-DX Sammy, but some early MK2 360FM's covered mid/high/high high as stock. I have no idea when these started and finished production, but there does seem to be some weird and wonderful variants out there.

Hi Andy.

Yeah. I think those ones have the higher crystal in them. The mk1 I have is a bit more like the first 360 which had 10m as well on the high band.

Love this hobby. Learn something new every day 😀

Hi Claude .

Yes , but that only talks about the transition from the mk1 to the mk2 . I'm talking about the change in the mk1 bands from MID/HI/10m to LOW/MID and HI .

Salut

I'm sure the first ever radio I tarted up was like that in about '85. It was a non-FM Superstar 360.

Yeah . That's standard for the 1979 Superstar 360 .

I'd just never came across the same thing with the mk1 148 GTL-DX .

Just double checked my non FM 360 and, as I thought, it covers mid, high and the last band is up in 10 metres.

Yeah . So did mine . That's the 360 standard . I moved the crystals in mine and did a mod to get the standard LOW/MID and HI bands . The other one I have had an eprom fitted to give it 5 bands .

The NOS 360fm MK2's I recently purchased the one that I briefly used was mid/High/High High and had a notice of variation with the manual to say the frequency lisiting in the manual LOW/Mid/High was wrong.

Slight correction . The old 360 had the FCC MID band on "LOW" . "MID" was 28.000-440 , and "HI" was 28.500-940 .
