I just run my fan from the power pack so that it is on all the time. It isn't any louder than the powerpack fan anyway. so it isn't an issue.

Ok perfect thanks yep as you say don't think it's much off an issue and have ordered a supposedly " silent fan " anyway ? Might use hexagonal pillars to mount the fan just above the heat sink , anyone else done this .. ?

I used a couple of cable ties around the fan and amp.

It has been ok for 4 years so must be quite permanent.

Okay maybe permanent was the wrong word to use.. actually meant more professionally looking. !!

To be honest used the kl203 with the cable tie arrangement before and as you say does the job well. !!

WA10,

I just read this thread through and you took the words out of my mouth re the 550 and I've never run one!

The 1407 datasheet says it all: https://www.mouser.com/ds/2/453/sd1407-13154.pdf so two do not equate to half a kilowatt or anywhere close, that is unless it's over-driven and you add all the harmonic content :-)

IMO the very best thing one can do with most all amplifiers and not just the RM's is to drive them with 50% of what the manufacturer states for drive.

You get better reliability, a cooler running amp and a cleaner signal through lower intermod distortion however you won't get the "Worked all Neighbors" award with a wide covering half the band.

RM would probably sell a lot fewer amplifiers if you adhered to the above.

Its more appealing to believe the amp makers impossible ratings when the truth sound much less impressive.

I've always believed that a linears power rating was the INPUT watts i.e. how much power it uses, so a 300W amp will take 21 amps or so at 13.8v. I wouldn't expect 300W out. Sounds more likely imho. The sales copywriters take the highest number for the ads, obviously, being sales people, they like the bigger numbers. I wouldn't expect any better than 40% efficiency either so it kinda fits for me.

me and a mate run rm kl 500`s when the need arises his does 250 mine does 380 , tested off the same battery , radio , swr , meter and dummy load and we tested his first input power was 15 w, it was his battery so i dont know how charged it was , but i do know from my fully charged battery that still bubbles straight off the charger i get 450 plus out of mine for how long i dont know and all i did to mine was upgrade the power cable and fuse holder , brigded the 3 internal fuse holders and put 2 thicker cables on the board somewhere
and its not worth the while sticking 10 into a 203 its alot happier running with an input from 6to 8 watts or less if you want it to run cool
on air, tyne&wear, northumberland, durham, holy island,eu120+eu124 and anywhere from gateshead/north wales
