Best Linear for 27 MHz?

Post by adrianf1 » 07 Aug 2017, 19:49

I see a lot of linear amplifiers for sale from various internet sellers,
but which one gives "the most bang for your bucks ?"

Looking for SSB performance, and reliability.
Needs to be capable of around 500W PEP (or more).
Supply voltage/current is not an issue.
I just want the best value vs performance.

Tube, transistor?
B550 will give you 480W PEP

Personally I would aim for BLF188XR built amp.
You can't have too many antennas...

If you're looking for 500W or more then you will be looking at linears predominantly meant for HF operation such as Ameritron or the Yaesu Quadra types, which you will pay 4 figures for if you want a good one. But, the majority of linears will never deliver the amout of power output that is stated, even a KW linear you will be lucky to squeeze 800W out of it. The secret is to not put too much power in from the radio, there are more linears blown by over powering them, most of the linears you see that have an external finned heat sink should not have any more than 10W put into them to get the most efficient power out plus you'll get a much 'cleaner' audio out and not 'splatter' across either side the frequency you're transmitting on. That's my experience anyway.

After much deliberation I have gone for the RM KL505V.

I got a great deal from Andy at Moonraker, so much so I bought 2!
One for the QTH and one for mobile op's :D

In the specs for the KL-505 it gives the output power on SSB 'up to' 300W so that means it may just peak at 275 (ish). Like I said before, to get 500 or more out you need an HF linear.

Well, there isn't a lot of difference between 300w and 500w in the real world. And I've heard these RM amplifiers aren't very linear and have a 'dirty' output.

An M6 with a 300w 80m-10m HF amplifier in their shack, that'll go down well on an OFCOM spot-check.

I use this when needs require. Fairly hefty output and an excellent tuneable pre amp. Never had any issues plus it's mains so no need for a huge PSU.

Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!

Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...
