Which To Keep...

Post by astradyne »

Hi guys.

I have two black Jackson's here and one is going up for sale. One is an older five band version which was made in the Philippines. No mods, but has had the output transistor replaced at some point.

The second is the later six band ALC version which was made in China. This has had a UK40 eprom fitted and a variable power pot fitted to the back where the external signal meter socket should be (thankfully they left the external signal meter socket sealed inside the radio, so I'm going to remove the pot and refit the socket). This radio has the MRF455 output.

Both have had the AGC mod done. Both radio's work well.

My obvious choice is the earlier radio, but I'm throwing it open to you guys for opinions.

Keep the earlier one.

I wasn't keen on the later ASC chinese built versions.

The earlier version is the one I would keep.

I would stick the EPROM into the five bander and let the six bander go.

I wouldn't waste money putting a EPROM into it. CB Radio is dead. Spend your money on something useful.

I don't use the UK40 so the eprom is of no use to me. But the opinion is unanimous in favour of the older radio so here it will stay. The six band version with the eprom will be going up for sale shortly then.

Cheers guys.

I wouldn't fit an eprom either. Especially as the radio already does the UK40 in the tradition export fashion. (If you are desperate enough to use it for that)

I would put the EPROM in because I like the muppets and fannying about with the 'export' method when mobile is fiddly. It can be removed when moving it on, but hey, that's my opinion.

Big fan of having the muppets in an export radio....

But these days, feel bad about cutting up tracks on un-modded vintage radios....especially if they're minty on the outside..

Either way, I'd keep the 5-band early one (I have one, and love it to bits - muppets were in it when bought, which saved me feeling bad about hacking it  ).

My 2c if it's worth owt....
Unidens (one or two)..
Cybernets (a few more)..

Cheiza CB702 workshop monitor
A few more, I forget...

IMHO There's nothing wrong with the 6 band PRC ASC version . Saying that , if I had to choose , then I'd also go with the 5 bander .

I had one PRC 6 bander with ASC and IMO the board inside didn't seem as good quality as on the earlier Philippines versions.

It was thinner, lighter in colour and almost see through.

The fitting of the ASC is also a bit of a bodge with hot melt glue all over the place.

It seemed to work ok though.
