President Lincoln - Signal Meter Help Needed!

Post by beamer320i »

Hi all,

Just bought a 2001 MRF455 Lincoln that has a very over-active RF meter - i.e. if you switch it on from cold with no antenna plugged in, it immediately reads S3 then after 10-20 seconds creeps up until it reaches S7. As soon as you plug an antenna into it it reads full. This is on AM/FM, SSB is the same less one bar. Receive itself is fine, as is transmit. Radio works very well, apart from the meter!

The VR inside for the meter does work, but obviously not enough to bring it down, meaning there's an issue somewhere? Is it likely to be a capacitor fault or something more serious?

Thanks for your help!

I had a similar fault once, Behind the FM PCB there are two caps in series, Test them. It may not be the same cause but worth trying.

Also check the SWR/CAL control isnt broken [look at the back of it for any signs of a crack]

Hi Nick,

It's funny that you should mention the SWR/CAL control, the previous owner said it had been 'repaired' or 'replaced' so something there may be causing issues?

Cheers

When "ground" cable from SWR pot is bad connected that might be a cause.
