Nato 2000

Post by Avenger »

As in the export model not the one with the Amstrad chassis, was there anything done to the export version that restricted it to just the 27/81 channels back in the day (like the ss360 with the jack plug).just made me wonder as I don't recall any of the other cybernet boarded multimodes ever being badged as 27/81?

They had 2 "chips" on a daughter board that you had to swap over, and the power had to be adjusted.

One of my favourite rigs that is :)
I know they had the 27/81 badge on the front, but all the ones I saw when I had the CB shop (in Chester) were not locked in any way. Talk about spaghetti inside!!!. But I always found them to be good performers.

Not really had much luck with cybernet radios, I always found them a bit average.

However the best one I had was a tristar 777, which shares the same board as the Nato 2000

I've found them to be pretty good myself but always wondered how they got away with the 27/81 badging

Like a lot of 'grey' imports they came via the Isle of Man, the 'chips' at the time were thought to be some kind of magic, but we have learnt retrospectively that they were just continuity bridges. A lively Cybernet front end that suffered from splatter in the good old days of every man and his dog having a CB, but these days is a very useful radio, apart from the controls being so bloody close together. Get one for £100 or less and you have a great radio.

When I was a kid I saw these advertised in the CB mags of the day (often on the back page) from Turman Models in the Isle of Man.

I thought they looked the business and I would have loved one..... but at £167.99, they were out of my pocket money range.

Some years later I bought one and eagerly connected it up, and was really disappointed with it.

The TX audio was good on FM, thin on AM dreadful on SSB, and it was as deaf as a post. And the damn controls are too close together.

Thinking this was probably a "duffer", I have since had 2 more...... and whilst not quite as bad, they never lived up to the promise.

I have since found that a lot of the later Cybernet boarded rigs are just as bad (not had a 133 board so can't comment)...... Still a fan of the 0059(and both XTAL boards) and 121 radio's (when you can find one that hasn't been screwdrivered to death)... but the later ones..... no thanks.

I can't say I've seen another Cybernet multimode with CB27/81 on it (originally sold as such), but I do remember a few of Superstar 2000's round this way had the badge on and the front plate made no mention of mode or band.... but I think this was possibly someone doing conversions....??

That's interesting Otter, I've seen a few for sale without the mode switch decal fitted on ebay.

I sure as hell wish I had never sold mine. With a couple of minor tweaks, active 10.7 filter and careful set up of the ssb tx, I found it one of the best "old skool" sets I ever owned, plus it was small and much cooler looking than your Cobras and Superstars. I wonder if it's narrow enough to fit in my new Peugeot's center console 8)

Mind you, I agree that most of the other Cybernet SSB radios (121 and 125 based) where pretty poor.

Mine's got the stickers on (2 if I recall correctly, one for bands, one for modes).
Most people left them off for the stealth legal look and they usually got lost or thrown away. Some eventually fell off over the years after being stuck in a hot/cold/hot loft or general use and abuse.
I did see one a couple of years back which was pretty mint with both unused stickers still in the box! I wonder if Peter King bought it as it went for a princely sum???

The two "chips" are just jumper pins one of which is blank and dosn't need to be used, Only the the one needs to be swapped from one seat to the other to swap between UK and Export, I still have one good Nato 2000 but have no plans to sell it well not until the skip returns and prices come back up again :)
