The MK4 is my old one. It was perfectly fine when I owned it, but I wouldn't touch it now that Cobraworxshopz have been in it. Silly mods and a nail varnish fetish.

The £100 I paid for the MK4 off Gumtree was cheap to say the least. But after owning/using one I have to say they're definitely nothing special. In fact, I'd have to say I much prefer the performance of an unmodded 148/360.
Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!

Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...

Cobra 148 gtl-dx has great transmit audio. I would not be surprised if a lot of hams use them on 10m band.

|'m sure no Hams would ever use them on 11 meters :o

But many have been converted over the years to 10 meters :D

I have found that pretty much all Uniden radios sound very similar on TX.

Cobra Mk2's, Stalkers, Jacksons, Grant 1's, Lincolns and even 3900's sound pretty much the same.

The only one that sounds a bit different (On FM at least) was the Mk1 cobra

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Im suprised you didnt replace the encoder out as the original didn't give it justice really....
As for the VFO knob that was an afterthought just didn't have the feel of a VFO at all as you say a spun alloy VFO knob give the VFO feel to the MK4-5's

I used to mod the spring in the incremental encoder & with the weight of the alloy knob it worked & felt nice to operate bit like a HF set of the time
i also did the same setup to a few lincoln/2830s

crikey this takes me back as well. I knew (of) john, wasn't a drinking buddy but knew his circle, he agreed to do me a 148 conversion in about 90/91, he said that he 'didn't bugger about with tired sets', so I bought a brand new 148 mk2 for £211, yup, £211. I hand delivered it to him and offered him the cash up front but he declined as 'it was his policy to take due compensation when the customer was happy', seriously, I'm not making this up, he was an odd character alright. anyway it took bloody months to get the thing back, but when It did, I was the dogs dangly things in town, I dined out on that set for years, I had so many offers to buy it it was stupid, and some were offering a grand, and this is 25 years ago. I sold it in about 2000 for £300 wich was still a lot of dosh then, I wonder if its still about, it was well used when I sold it, it had a hard life.

talking of him bein odd, I asked him how much I owed him and he replied 'how much is it worth to you?' I gave him £100 and he took it and didn't reply, so to this day I don't know if I offended him with a paultry amount.
