Hygain VIII home base....

Some years ago I spotted one of these am/ssb home bases in a second hand shop. I used to walk past the window and look at it week after week. Then one day it was gone. I've not seen another one since. There are probably people who will say they were rubbish. But I personally like the styling of this piece of 70s/80s weirdness....Is the main body of it made from an original atari console? lol.

It looks like an Atari and an 80's answering machine 'got it on' and gave birth to the Hygain VIII ;)

Yes you're right i've been looking up the PTBM048 to wire this Superstar UFO up to a 059COX But all the UFO manual cover's is the PTBM048 so i had to sit there and look what the difference was between the PTBM048 and the PTBM059COX and all i can really see that's different is the VCO being the old tin one and the Loop circuit and afew other bits as well as not adding FM so i've come to the conclusion that Cybernet got the PTBM048 pcb and cut the front end off and replaced it with the PTOS006AOX to cut cost down on making other main pcb..............

Err.. not quite, it uses a PTBM030 main board with a seperate pll/xtal board behind the channel changer in the top bit. Some funny frequency xtals and a lot of 'em too. Info on them is very hard to come by though.

I thought Cybernet modded/cut the PTBM058 (that's zero five eight) board for the later export rigs, same as the ones used in the General Electric ssb rigs, looks the same though so don't know what improvements were made, I've yet to see one in the flesh.

I am, I seen it at cubby's last week when I went round there. He was working on it then so I had a look inside, he was scratching his head trying to find info on it. Any chance of a link to the site you found a schematic on? And how about our friend Claude, he comes up with some good info from different sources... CQ Claude... copy Mitch c' mon :D

I found this on the net in Brazil................

Cybernet also produced a radio boards intended for market
"Export", with more channels and FM, with a circuit very similar to the board

Colt 485.

when 40 channels were released by the FCC for the U.S. market, some
made history as the radios produced by Uniden (lines Cobra, Superstar

However, a number of equipment AM / SSB also produced by Cybernet
was very successful, among them Lafayette, the G & E and Hy Gain.
Most models radio AM / SSB Cybernet the PLL02A used, the

Uniden were produced in Taiwan, the Philippines and finally in Malaysia.
These models Cybernet also had success in Brazil, where the models
known were the Hy Gain V (2705), GE 3-5825A, Lafayette Telsat SSB80,
Telsat SSB120 Lafayette, Lafayette Telsat SSB 140 and Cobra 148 GTL-B (which was

Besides these models already mentioned, these plates were also used by

Pearce-Simpson Super Panther, Pearce Simpson Bengal Mark-I, RCA 14T302,
Truetone CYJ4837A-87 Universe 5600.
For these models, there are the service manuals SAMs Photofacts 153, 175, 180,

Cybernet also produced a radio boards intended for market
"Export", with more channels and FM, with a circuit very similar to the board
PTBM048A0X, while in Brazil the most common model is the Radio Cobra 150 GTL

similar models, as PTBM059, PTBM080, PTBM125 but generally used
models destined for the European, Australian, and New Zealand, and for this
same reason, difficult to find in Brazil

He won't have lost it but if it's different to what's reported then it's of little use unfortunately. I should've took pics because we all know "pics or it didn't happen"
I don't know if he's still got it but if I speak to him I'll ask him. I've not seen another rig using an 030 board and he couldn't find any info, but it did look 'old tech' (but typical cybernet) to me, I think the pll board was a PTOS015 from memory. I did see it with my own eyes though. Still if it works well it really doesn't matter. There could be differences between the same models, some early and some late etc. I haven't had much to do with old CB's 'till recently though and I'm a bit rusty now.
