Iv'e never owned a 706. But i presume like most modern HF radios it will have a switchable preamp, If its set to on turn it off, Preamps aren't needed on HF

As Buick Makane has said, on HF, you can switch the pre-amp off and on 40 and 80 metres you can go further.
The pre-amp button cycles through "pre-amp on", "pre-amp off" and "attenuator on"
Another one (not cheap but very effective) is fit the FL223 narrow ssb filter.
If you also dabble on CW or RTTY, there is a second socket so you could fit a cw filter as well
If you listen on the cw end of an active band without a cw filter, you will find 3 or 4 signals in the passband
I'm not keen on the dsp noise reduction on the 706 as it puts "watery artefacts" on the signal
Other than that, I think it's a damn good radio

What antennas are you using, and how are they earthed Warlock ?
Plenty are talking worldwide on 27.555 usb,
Some are too far up their own @rse to admit it,
Many happen to know otherwise dx-ing test free,
Showing a complete lack of respect for the law.

There's also the DSP "NR" function on the 706 that will reduce the background noise somewhat.
