Kenwood ts 140s dots appear.
Have a Kenwood ts 140s when switched on display comes on but after a few seconds radio will beep a kind of code and when it stops beeping dots appear on display.
I have noticed that the memory battery is missing could this have something to do with display showing all dots.

Dont know that model, but had a TS2000 that did that to indicate the VFO was out of lock, due to someone widebanding it.

You have to adjust VCO voltage as service manual says.

I know with the 430/440s it displays dots due to dry joints on the VCOs as i have done a few and also glue thats gone conductive in the VCO area, If the same applies to the 140s i cant say, So dont adjust anything because if it works one minute then not the next then it could be dry joints and no amount of adjusting will fix it.
Have you tried installing a battery ? It might be handy to jot down the code and see what its saying, It may well be telling you to replace battery

Thanks for all your comments.
I have ordered a new battery and have not touched anything. I will wait for battery to arrive and will install it it may just be that as Black Spirit has suggested.
It no joy it will be going to Nick for repair and realignment

I would say it is highly likely the battery being missing being the issue. I had a TS2000 that kept resetting because the battery had failed.
I will not be commanded, I will not be controlled.

99% certain that it's the battery as suggested. Another way to know for certain, read the service manual.

It the "code" your hearing is UNLOCK in morse code, then your PLL is unlocking.
The 440 suffers from this dot problem too. With the 440, the brown gunk you see on the board (Sonybond) deteriorates with age. As it does it becomes conductive, which creates the problem. Cleaning it off usually resolves the issue.
Sounds very much like you might have a similar issue. If the battery fix doesn't work, then it might be worth investigating/googling the gunk issue more info. Lots around about it as it is pretty common on the 440.
