What would it be like if Amateur radio was advertised on TV

Post by StormShadow » 06 Feb 2016, 14:19

It could be a really good thing but at the same time it could attract some unwanted interest from money making companies. Coming to think of it there aren't really any hobbies that are advertised. People know about other hobbies like train/plane spotting, metal detecting and astronomy etc but Ham radio is generally nonexistent in common society but if Amateur radio was advertised then it could be a good thing. I know in the Army/Sea/Air Cadets Ham radio is mentioned but I'm not sure if it still is today. I think it could be a good idea for the RSGB to try get an advert put on TV.

Just think about it, there would be less crime, things to do, more people would be learning new stuff other than watching Eastenders and cookery programs on TV etc and tapping away at there smart phones all day.

What do people think?

I think you've hit the sherry bottle a bit early.

There's nothing to sell, and no one to pay for it.

Apparently the age group the hobby is trying to attract don't watch traditional TV anyway, they use catch up, youtube, PC's etc so a TV advert wouldn't really catch them.
I'd never see it here - all my programmes are streamed from Amazon - bonus, no TV license required and I'll get to see top gear again.

Looks like I'm the stupid one here, I have a fully paid up TV licence and only put the thing on when the Grandkids come round to shut them up, I don't watch TV otherwise.

Then knock it on the head like I did - get a dongle or playstation etc and you can still legally watch catch up TV if you want.
You are only paying £145 for the privilege of watching or recording programming at the time it is broadcast.

They will be scrapping the TV license soon anyhow, my TV spends most of its time switched off, the only time I have it on is when I'm playing GTA on the Play Station but surly people must watch there TV's as everybody has one or three in there house? I'm also paying for a TV license even tho I hardly watch it.

We are the last humans left to keep the hobby alive - it will die off as no one is interested anymore.

My kids don't get it, my neighbours think I am a complete **** and don't get it, nobody other than the pre-internet generation actually understands what Amateur Radio is, the cement mixer driver thought it was a CB antenna I was installing, he had no comprehension it was to support a mast and VHF array and I could not be chewed explaining to him the difference.

We are being forced out by QRM from illegal devices such as PLT, Plasma etc and when that is not enough it will be a waiting game for many of us to die off - the illuminati controlled corporates are sitting waiting to get their hands on what is left of the RF spectrum so they can squeeze another few MB of data speed to the internet hungry public.

Such a shame.

If the RSGB did it, it would probably be something like this.

I for one wouldn't want to sit and watch tv ads for ham gear, or any type of radio gear for that matter. What would be the point of advertising radio gear anyway?

Probably a waste of time... A bit like trying to sell the Eurovision song contest to the Xfactor lovers!
