Good old searching. Thats how I started off when I first got a scanner.
Just searched away, yes it takes much longer than entering in a freq but when you find something new....the mystery as to what you are listening to.

my take on using a scanner or reciever is, you hit the scan button which can be very interesting as you said not realy knowing who your listening to, or be lazey and use the ofcom database

I have found load of new stuff that are not in any lists/books by scanning.

I think hummberfield cctv is now digital if that of help, has i have not hear it in sometime when i have been that way.

the local ham radio 70cm repeter is digital too call sign GB7HX ?

there was good stuff up above 453.000, but has i said it been mostly digital i have pick up when that in in the past 3 to 6 months, and my list is now out of date due to the modes in use around Hudderfield. :(
