When a loco or unit has an exam (a service in none railway terms) the NRN radio is tested by calling the remote radio test unit and leaving a message, generally the loco number. The unit then plays the message back confirming that the radio is transmitting and receiving.

Also if you want to tune to the station frequencies (not trains themselves) they are usually on analogue at 453.550 and 453.900, worth programming them in as well :)

I would imagine that the shunting yards would retain these local freqs, no point having them on a national network really :-/
