CAVRA moved to encrypted NEXEDGE ??

Post by bigbloke »

Hi all,

it seems that there is a high likelihood that CAVRA (civil aid voluntary rescue association - AKA Cardiff and Vale RA)
have either themselves gone nexedge48 digital with encryption or, someone else has moved onto 167.775 ,
who has deployed it

given that on the WTR there is no other use on that freq within about 30 radial miles, my money is on the former

regards

There is pressure on voluntary aid organisations to only pass 'sensitive' information (patient name, address etc) by secure means, so a move to encrypted NXDN is a good guess..
By the way RAYNET have shot themselves in the foot by members getting all sorts of makes and models of DMR radios, then finding out that they do not play together well - or at all in encrypted modes :)

All,

I Can confirm that CAVRA are using NXDN Protocol (Icom Idas). All 4 sites accross South Wales have been upgraded to Icom IC-FR5100 repeaters. Also the Simplex channels also known as TWC's (Team Working Channels) are now NXDN aswell.

CAVRA is also using 15 bit encryption on their network.

Good choice nxdn audio with the new firmware is miles better than dmr and if they use 6.25 they will get a little more range too.

just out of interest could a program be made to "guess" them via SDR?

according to the late Douglas Adams,

"Nothing is impossible, but some things are very, very, improbable"

I think this falls into the latter category :-)

I believe that the idea came from a leading supplier of SAR kit/radios two years ago, but nothing came of it, it is likely that cavra have received some grants/funding and they have "shopped locally" after harvesting information from the knowledge there held.

to be honest in all the time ive had CAVRA in the scanner memory (a number of years) Ive only heard them twice and never in a live deployment, only routine / exercise traffic.

hardly a big loss

Interestingly AOR have just announced that their AR-DV1 digital receiver will decode Nextedge/Idas/NXDN basic privacy:

"NXDN Descramble function on the AOR AR-DV1.
---------------------------------------------------------------
(For 15 bit digital scrambling mode NXDN signals. Does not support encrypted mode NXDN signals )

-Select the NXDN mode (=D-CR) or AUTO mode.

Once the desired signal is received:

-Click once on the main tuning dial

-Long press on MODE button

The blinking question marks means that AR-DV1 is searching for the descrambling code. It just takes 1 or 2 seconds if reception conditions are good. Once found, it will display the scramble code such as 000015 for example and you will hear the decoded voice.

Please note that although the display shows "ENC.CODE", it actually means "descramble" code. No relation to encryption."

Frequencies are as follows.

All repeaters work Analogue and Digital

Cardiff RPTR - RX 167.7750 TX+4.8mhz 023D/167.9
Vale of Glam RPTR - RX 168.2750 TX+4.8mhz 023D/103.5
Bridgend RPTR - RX 166.3875 TX+4.8mhz 023D/167.9
Gwent RPTR - RX 166.3250 TX+4.8mhz 023D/103.5

Digital is NXDN Talk Group 1 with encryption code of 19881

Also using all 7 VHF High band simplex
